Charmed by Jay McCarrol

I recently attended a seminar on the music industry and sense of place, the session, very aptly titled This Must Be the Place. I got into a very brief discussion with a former Toronto resident, Brian Hracs, now working as Geography professor working in Uppsala, Sweden. He made the claim that the Toronto music scene was an extremely hard scene to flourish in.

Months later, I still feel pretty wry about this. The optimist in me likes to think that there is a fairly accessible music scene for any new artist.

I found this incredibly sweet interview with Jay McCarrol, who I’ve seen three times this year alone. He plays in both Hayden and Jason Collett’s back-up bands. Given he is by extension a part of the Arts & Crafts family, I think Toronto is a somewhat welcoming music scene.
