Dan Auerbach, frontman of the Black Keys, released a gorgeous album titled Keep It Hid about this time five years ago.
I was lucky enough to see Auerbach and his band the Fast Five play the Phoenix in Toronto. I remember very distinctly the Christmas lights the band had strewn across the audience. The lights were timed to go off with the chorus of the tune “Real Desire,” it was a truly gorgeous moment.
It’s incredible to think of the fame that the Black Keys developed with their album Brothers and even more so El Camino. I have to admit, when a band gets real big, I tend to lose interest. I’m not possessive about music, but there’s something amazing about listening to a novel artist.
