Gush: Hannah Georgas

I first learned about Hannah Georgas from Rich Terfry and his CBC 99.1FM radio show Drive. I then saw her tour with Kathleen Edwards in support of the perfect album Voyageur. Then, many years later, with the National in Hamilton, with their female-infused album, I Am Easy to Find.

After some internet searching, I found out that Georgas has been working with the National’s Aaron Dessner on her new music. Here are two gorgeous tunes that I listen to at least twice daily, soak it up!

Gush: Grapes of Wrath “Isn’t There”

I never date anyone who likes the same music as me!!! It’s always a weird predicament. I once dated someone who liked late a lot of ’80s/’90s alt-rock. Tuning into one of my favourite radio shows this evening, CBC Radio 2 Drive, this tune was played. It made me think of that late ’80s alt-rock sound instantly.

Sure enough, it was a tune by the Canadian band the Grapes of Wrath, titled “Isn’t There.” Much to my surprise, despite its dated sound, the tune was actually released this year….!

What a catch!

Southern Souls spend some time with Bahamas

Guerrilla videos are big. A few years back I found myself completely infactuated with the charm and randomness of the Black Cab Sessions and La Blogotheque. I think Canadian collective Southern Souls has done a really nice job of capturing that.

Here are a few tender public moments with Bahamas aka Afie Jurvanen:

ON a side note, my pal Dan has started up his own sessions, delightfully titled Pinball Sessions.

Coachella 2013: Jurassic 5

In 2006, I saw J5 play a tiny venue in Toronto called the Reverb. The dingy three-floor (?) venue has now become a Crate and Barrel, but I sure have some dynamite memories of the Big-Bop complex. My understanding it was an old dance-cave-like hangout for pop-rock folks wanting to dance… Who would’ve guessed?

I shot CB2’s tribute to the Big Bop when they opened back in early 2012.

OK but my point here is that I’m super stoked be able to see J5 again this April at Coachella! After listening to an 8tracks mix, I immediately recognised the deep voiced rapper Chali 2na.

Here are a few tunes and a mix that you may enjoy:

A Nelly Furtado collab, not sure how this happened:
